Heritage Listing
The Ngāti Hikairo proposal to enter Mātakitaki, Mātakitaki Road, Pirongia (List no.9812) on the New Zealand Heritage List/Rārangi Kōrero (‘the List’) has been accepted by the Māori Heritage Council of Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Tangata. Mātakitaki covers three sections, Mātakitaki to the north-west, Taura-Kohia, and Puketutu to the east. It has been deemed to have sufficient significance to be entered onto the List as a Wāhi Tapu Area. Mātakitaki pā was the traditional capital centre of Ngāti Hikairo – built on a narrow strip of land at the junction of the Waipā River and the Mangapiko Stream.
The List entry will take effect on Monday 22 July 2019.
