Message from the Chair

Te pakanga e, te pakanga e, e ora ana te mano o Ngāti Hikairo, e kore e mau te rongo e

E te iwi e Ngāti Hikairo, tēnā koutou katoa,

Firstly, on behalf of Te Rūnanganui o Ngāti Hikairo and the Claims team we would like to thank the Waipapa Marae Trustees for hosting the wānanga over the weekend and secondly for everyone attending. It was a lot to take in over the 3 days and we covered so much packed with highlights and the conversations were jammed packed with positive kōrero about moving forward.

Please bear with us as we go through all the kōrero however in summary the key points for Ngāti Hikairo who attended were:

  • Te Mana Motuhake o Ngāti Hikairo we are an independent Iwi, part of the Rohe Pōtae, our rohe had been split by raupatu,
  • Our desire for self-determination, that fundamentally works for us and supports and maintains our independence without giving up our autonomy
  • The lack of a transparent process from the Crown, and the perception of “moving the goal posts”

As advised by Te Arawhiti, decisions about who the Crown settles with are political decisions furthermore, if Ngāti Hikairo chooses to not support / join the Waikato – Tainui mandate then all existing Ngāti Hikairo claims, will not be a priority as there is no political will to settle them anytime soon.

At the moment the Claims team is collating all the kōrero and summarising the notes from Te Arawhiti (Office of Treaty Settlements) and will be providing a series of recommendations to Te Rūnanganui o Ngāti Hikairo.
